The Technology Being LED TVs
Flat-screen televisions using light emitting diode or LED technology have been making waves in the technology world. Samsung has released what it claims to be an LED flat-screen television, but the truth is that their 7000 series are really liquid crystal display televisions that are simply backlit by LEDs. Granted, this is an incredible improvement, but let‘s be clear about definitions before going any further. Sony had a true LED television for a while, the XEL-1. The picture quality was said to be fantastic by many major reviewers. With Samsung‘s release of their new ‘LED‘ televisions, it needs to be known that they are not true LED televisions, but LCD televisions that are backlit by LEDs.Let‘s examine how these televisions work. An LCD screen cannot produce its own light. The crystals can form images, but the images themselves have to be backlit by a light source in order to be seen. Until recently, this lighting was provided by cold cathode fluorescent lamps. CCFL lighting technology does generate much heat but it does produce a lot of light. The bad news is that the contrast and picture quality with CCFL-backlit LCD televisions are not that great when compared to LED-backlit LCD televisions. An LED is the most ubiquitous electronic device ever invented; they are present in everything from appliances to supercomputers.
LEDs are great at producing light, since all they use is a small semiconductor. When electricity is sent through the semiconductor, it emits photons. LEDs are used as signal lights in a variety of electronic devices. When it comes to televisions, LED-backlit LCD televisions use the light produced by LEDs to illuminate the LCD-produced images. This creates fantastic contrast because the light from the LEDs diffuses more easily than it does from the old CCFL technology. This results in fantastic picture quality.
It also results in new design changes being made to LCD TVs. They are slimmer than they used to be, enabling lighter designs. LED-backlit LCD televisions also consume far less power, which saves money and energy, making these televisions environmentally-friendly. These two features of LED LCD TVs make them a great buy when it comes to technology buffs. Families can now enjoy quality television pictures while paying only a fraction of the cost in energy bills. Take a look at buying a new LED LCD television today and see the difference for yourself.
LED TVs use light emitting diodes instead of the standard fluorescent lamps for the backlight, to create a brighter and crisper image on an LCD flat panel television. They are more energy efficient than their CCFL counterparts, and better than plasma Tvs and much better than CRTs. Thanks a lot.
